Portraiture Inspirtation: Euan Uglow

Zagi  1981-2
Oil on canvas
I love the accuracy Uglow captures in his portraits. I tend to work too quickly when drawing portraits from life and loose sight of the importance of accuracy. I need to slow down and work on the sighting and angles of the face and pose before I commit to rendering the specific details on the model's face. The planar surfaces on the body and face are so important when working from a model and drawing from life.

One thing I love about Uglow's work are the reference lines that show through the painting. His precision is impecable.

Antonio Lopez Garcia

I finally ordered an Antonio Lopez book. This is my first *real* art book and I absolutely love it. The information is amazing and the catalogue of paintings/drawing/sculptures are some of the best I've seen. It is a pleasure to read about Antonio Lopez's working habits and seeing him in his studio and working on his paintings. I can't wait to start working on some master sketches from the beautiful images in this book.

I only paid $52.00 for this PLUS free two day shipping. It doesn't get much better than that now, does it?

Standing Woman

Standing Woman. Charcoal on Drafting Film. 20x20

Sketch book

Study of my hands. Graphite. 20 minutes each.

Bent hand study. Ball point pen, 20 minutes each.

Self Portrait

The drawing below was originally going to be done in pen, but I figured I would switch to pastel/chalk to make it more of a 'study'. I'm also only allowing myself a little less than an hour on this one. Perhaps if I end up liking the concept enough, I will revisit it on a larger scale.

Self Portrait Study(Mirrored and Foreshortened). Conte crayon, pastel, & graphite on drafting film.
